Russia takes over U.N. Security Council presidency, Ukraine outraged
In this issue: Russia takes over UN Security Council presidency, outrages Ukraine; Italy blocks ChatGPT over privacy concerns; Trump plans press conference after arraignment.
Russia has taken over the United Nations Security Council's presidency, with Ukraine's foreign minister calling it the "world's worst April Fool's joke". The Security Council's presidency rotates alphabetically among its 15 member nations, but Russia's control of the council this month has come under criticism. The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for President Vladimir Putin for illegally deporting hundreds of Ukrainian children, while Russia’s last time heading the council was in February 2022, the same month it invaded Ukraine. Ukraine has questioned Russia's permanent seat on the council, but there is currently no way to eliminate Russia as a permanent member, as a Russian veto would make a vote to remove it fail.

ASSOCIATED PRESS — Italy temporarily blocks ChatGPT over privacy concerns
Italian Data Protection Authority is temporarily blocking the use of OpenAI's ChatGPT in Italy while it investigates a potential violation of EU data protection regulations. OpenAI has disabled ChatGPT for Italian users in response to the government's request but believes its practices comply with EU privacy laws and aims to make ChatGPT available again soon. The restriction applies to the web version of ChatGPT, but it is unlikely to affect software applications from companies that already have licenses with OpenAI. OpenAI must report within 20 days the measures it has taken to ensure users' privacy or face a fine of up to 20 million euros or 4% of annual global revenue. The watchdog is also questioning the legal justification for OpenAI's "massive collection and processing of personal data" used to train the platform's algorithms. The president of Italy's privacy watchdog agency expressed concern that AI could impinge on a person's self-determination and called for a pause in the development of more powerful AI models until the fall. The EU consumer group BEUC has called for the investigation of ChatGPT and similar AI chatbots, citing concerns about how they might deceive and manipulate people.
WASHINGTON TIMES — Donald Trump pumped for a press conference after arraignment in New York
Former President Donald Trump is expected to hold a press conference following his arraignment in New York on Tuesday. According to an associate close to him, he is likely to communicate to supporters that the indictment is about them, not him. The indictment is the first criminal charge handed down against a former president. Trump's supporters believe the indictment will backfire on Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and propel Trump to the presidency in 2024, energizing not just Trump's base but also a broader coalition of Republicans and independents. The indictment relates to hush money payments made to adult performers in 2016. Trump is expected to arrive in New York on Tuesday for fingerprinting, a mugshot, and a post-arraignment press conference.
