Russian forces continue assault on key Ukrainian city of Bakhmut
The battle for Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine continues with Russian troops attempting to encircle and capture the key city, while Ukrainian forces remain standing their ground. Despite the difficult odds, Ukrainian troops have been repelling relentless Russian attacks on Bakhmut for months, hoping to exhaust the enemy in time for Ukraine’s counteroffensive with new battle tanks and other modern weaponry pledged by Western allies. The capture of the city, which was home to some 70,000 inhabitants before the war but now lies in ruins, would allow Russian troops to cut off Ukrainian supply lines and offer an avenue to taking full control of the rest of the Donbas region. While the possibility of Ukrainian forces withdrawing from the city has been raised, an adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine is not going to sacrifice its people just for nothing.
